Werners History
At Werners we've been making fine handmade sausages as master butchers since 1973. Dave & Judy Miller own and run Werners. The store sells a wide selection of fine German and Scandanavian products, now available for the first time in our eShop online!
"We bring years of experience to the tradition, and we hope you’ll experience the difference our traditional hand made sausages bring to your table." -Dave and Judy Miller Inside our Kansas City store
A product of German Village in Columbus, Ohio, Dave Miller grew up around traditional meats and sausages. He found early on he not only liked eating them, but making them as well. His early work experience drew him to the meat department of the local supermarket, where he learned from old-school butchers or “Metzgers” as they are called in the old country. Through high school, Dave learned the trade, and put himself through college “breaking beef”, a skill which today is rare in most meat cutters. Following college at Ohio State University, Dave began a sales career with a German firm, but never quite lost his love for the meat trade. After a 20 year hiatus, Miller got back into production, and after another 7 years as a journeyman meat cutter and sausage maker, fulfilled a life-long dream purchasing Werner’s Specialty Foods in 1995 from an “old-school” Metzger. Werner Wohlert began Werner’s Specialty Foods in 1973 at the site of the old Swansons establishment near 39th and State Line in Kansas City. He moved the business to its present location in 1976, where it continued to supply the Kansas City metro area with the very finest custom-processed meats and sausages. From initial offerings of Bratwurst, Knackwurst, Italian, Polish and Swedish Potato Sausages, The Millers have expanded the line over the years to include several varieties of Bratwursts such as the Bier Cheddar Brat, a spicy traditional Andouille sausage, and a U.K. favorite, the “Banger”.
